Yeah the controls definately need improved.
Also I would suggest making some of your own music and sprites, especially the backgrounds as you can see where they tile so it looks unproffesional.
Your idea is sound, you just have to work on the implementation a bit. This game could be fun once you've sorted out the controls.
I would suggest some gravity too. I have an old game called sea evolution. I'll post it here for you to have a look at so you can see what I mean with the controls and the gravity.

There, I've uploaded Sea Evolution for you to have a look at. It's not brilliant but I think it's got some things that you should be looking to achieve.
